Braids: Masculine or Misunderstood?

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

I was watching an awards show not too long ago and was shocked to hear a celebrity stylist say that he was so happy that Alicia Keys ditched her “masculine” braids. He kept going on and on about how much  more feminine she looked with her hair down. I thought he was being ridiculous and sensational; I figured he was just rambling on about it because he wanted to turn a few heads. That was until I decided to try out a new salon. The stylist there suggested that he twist my hair instead of braid it because I would look “more feminine”.

Did I miss something? Since when did braids become a man’s domain? Did it happen with the rise of hip hop culture or with the notoriety of basketball players? Has anyone else noticed this fad?

  1. That’s ridiculous. I like braids on men too sometimes, but there is nothing masculine about braids.

  2. I couldn’t agree more.
